Harvest Festivals Reveal the Benefits and Challenges of Serving Local Produce in Schools
What do students at Shorewood Hills, Lincoln, and Chavez Elementary Schools have in common? All 1,400 of them, along with school staff and parents, will experience the bounty of local agriculture this month in school-wide Harvest Festivals.

UW-Madison dairy cattle judges compete at Accelerated Genetics Judging Contest
A team of dairy cattle judges from the University of Wisconsin-Madison took fourth place at the Accelerated Genetics 10th Annual Midwest Intercollegiate Dairy Cattle Judging Contest, Sept. 14 at Viroqua, Wis. Tom Agnew of Marengo, Ill., a senior majoring in dairy science, was second high individual overall and 6th in oral reasons.

Buege honored by ASDA with Signal Service Award
Dennis R. Buege, professor and Extension meat scientist at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, received the 2003 American Meat Science Association Signal Service Award June 18 at the 56th Annual Reciprocal Meat Conference in Columbia, Mo. The AMSA Signal Service Award is given to members in recognition of devoted service and lasting contributions to the meat industry and to the association. This award was sponsored by The Solae Company, St. Louis, Mo.

Walworth County Tops 2003 State 4-H Dairy Judging Contest
Walworth County won the State 4-H Dairy Judging Contest Aug. 6 at the Wisconsin State Fair, and earned a trip to compete at the National 4-H Contest in Madison during World Dairy Expo. Dane County finished second in the contest and will compete at the Pennsylvania All-American Youth Dairy Judging Contest in Harrisburg, Pa., according to contest coordinator Ted Halbach, UW-Madison extension dairy youth specialist.

2003 James W. Crowley Leadership Award Winners Announced
Six dairy youth received James W. Crowley Leadership Awards at the 2003 Wisconsin State Fair. These youth were rewarded for their outstanding dairy project work. Each award winner received a plaque provided by the James W. Crowley Dairy Management and Extension Fund.
