A team of dairy cattle judges from the University of Wisconsin-Madison’s College of Agricultural and Life Sciences placed first in Guernseys and ninth overall at the North American International Livestock Exposition Intercollegiate Dairy Cattle Judging Contest, held at Louisville, Ky.

The Columbia County 4-H dairy cattle judging team placed fourth overall out of 23 teams at the National 4-H Dairy Cattle Judging Contest, held Sept. 28 during World Dairy Expo at Madison, WI.

The Jefferson County 4-H dairy cattle judging team placed second overall out of 14 teams at the Pennsylvania All-American Invitational 4-H Youth Dairy Cattle Judging Contest, Sept. 20 at Harrisburg, Pa.

The Wisconsin 4-H team placed fifth overall out of 23 teams at the North American International Livestock Exposition 4-H Youth Dairy Cattle Judging Contest, held Nov. 7 at Louisville, Kentucky.

Compared with established dairy farmers, new dairy farmers in Wisconsin are much less likely to be taking over the farm from their parents, and they’re more likely to use off-farm income to supplement their farm income, according to researchers with the Program on Agricultural Technology Studies at UW-Madison’s College of Agricultural and Life Sciences.

The Wisconsin School for Beginning Market Gardeners, part of the University of Wisconsin-Madison’s Farm and Industry Short Course, is offering a comprehensive three-day course detailing the operation of a fresh produce business. In addition, the School is offering a two-day special-topic workshop on welding for vegetable growers.

The Wisconsin Soybean Marketing Board and the University of Wisconsin-Madison are continuing their offer of one free soil test per farm to help Wisconsin soybean growers monitor their fields for the soybean cyst nematode.

Dairy Day, Dec. 2 at the Marshfield Agricultural Research Station, will focus on milking equipment, milker health and udder health.

The Department of Dairy Science in the UW-Madison’s College of Agricultural and Life Sciences is expanding its curriculum options for 1999 with the addition of a Dairy Enterprise Management specialization program.
