UW-Madison Students Win Second Place at Accelerated Genetics Dairy Judging Contest

A dairy cattle judging team from the University of Wisconsin-Madison placed second overall and first in oral reasons at the Accelerated Genetics 13th Annual Midwest Intercollegiate Dairy Cattle Judging Contest, Sept. 17 at Viroqua.

The UW-Madison Team Cardinal scored 2,033 points, 10 points behind the first-place team from Oregon State University. The Cardinal team placed 1st in Oral Reasons, 1st in Holsteins, 2nd in Guernseys, 5th in Milking Shorthorns, and 5th in Jerseys.

Two other Badger teams also competed in the contest. UW-Madison Team White took 6th in the contest overall and placed 5th in Oral Reasons, 2nd in Milking Shorthorns, and 2nd in Jerseys, while the UW-Madison Team Black placed 3rd in Jerseys and 5th in Holsteins.

Twenty national and regional university teams competed. Ted Halbach, dairy cattle evaluation instructor, and Dave Dickson, emeritus professor of dairy science, coached the teams.

“This is the first contest for our sophomores at the collegiate level,” said Halbach. “Having Walker, Morris and Bohn place 2,3,4 respectively in Oral Reasons is quite an accomplishment.”

“I can”t say enough about the job Evan Shnadt did as well,” stated Halbach. “Most of our kids are contest veterans because of all their 4-H experience but Evan came in with virtually no judging background and placed fourth and averaged just over 44 on his reasons – he”s like a sponge at practice taking in everything that”s said and has just made incredible progress this fall.”
