Visitors to the Marshfield Agricultural Research Station’s Dairy Day on Dec. 3 will pick up some tips on heifer management, along with an update on the station’s expansion project and a demonstration of silage storage in a bunker.

A University of Wisconsin-Madison dairy cattle judging team took first at the Mid-South Intercollegiate Dairy Cattle Judging Contest, Oct. 3 in Memphis, Tenn. The team was first in Oral Reasons, Jerseys and Guernseys; second in Ayrshires and Brown Swiss; and fourth in Holsteins.

Bill Reese of Madison has contributed $10,000 to the University of Wisconsin Foundation to establish the Bill Reese Dairy, Deli, and Bakery Study Grant Fund.

LaVerne Ausman has been selected to receive Honorary Recognition by the UW-Madison College of Agricultural and Life Sciences for his long and distinguished career as a dairy farmer, public servant and community leader.

High school juniors and seniors, their parents and other prospective students are invited to visit the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences at the University of Wisconsin-Madison to see if the Farm and Industry Short Course will meet their needs.

Young people interested in dairy farming have until Oct. 9 to apply for an innovative program, now in its fourth year, to help them establish their own grass-based dairy farms in Wisconsin.

The Annual Lancaster Cow-Calf Day will be held Tuesday, September 15, 1998 at the Lancaster Research Station.

Hands-on laboratories in the campus dairy barn have long been a part of the dairy science introductory course. Students in lab sections work with faculty, graduate students and senior undergraduates in a wide array of hands-on experiences — from handling cows in the barnyard to micromanipulating embryos in reproductive physiology labs. Likewise, the dairy herd management course makes extensive use of farm visits, and offers an optional visit to western dairies over spring break.

Margaret R. Dentine, a dairy scientist at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, has received the J. L. Lush Award in Animal Breeding in recognition of her outstanding research accomplishments in dairy cattle breeding.
