From glow-in-the-dark bacteria to televised tours of a live cow’s stomach, hot-rod tractors to virtual forests, you’ll find a variety of scientific show-and-tells at the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences Open House, Saturday, August 19 beginning at 10 a.m.

In survey responses, many private woodland owners say that scenery, wildlife habitat and recreational opportunities are more important to them than timber harvests. Now a University of Wisconsin-Madison researcher has come up with a method to estimate just how valuable those non-market goods are.

In nearly all of the United States, forest industries own the best land for growing trees while National Forests occupy some of the least productive land. But the reverse is true in Wisconsin, Michigan and Minnesota, according to a recent University of Wisconsin-Madison study.

James Borman has moved on to the happy hunting ground, but his legacy will touch people throughout Wisconsin. Over his lifetime, he assembled a massive collection of preserved wildlife specimens from North America and elsewhere. Borman, who died in 1999, willed his collection to the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Forest policy expert Sally K. Fairfax will give this year’s Aldo Leopold Lecture in Natural Resources, entitled Fragmenting the Landscape: Accounting for Private Management of Public Treasures. The lecture will be given Tuesday, March 28 at 3:30 p.m. in the Memorial Union’s Tripp Commons on the University of Wisconsin-Madison campus.

University of Wisconsin-Madison animal scientist Mark Cook is finding ways producers can raise chickens economically with fewer antibiotics. “I believe that our new tools and strategies will increase both animal and human health,” he says.
