UW-Madison Team Continues Top Five Streak At National Judging Contest

The UW-Madison Dairy Cattle Judging Team continued a 23-year streak of top-five finishes at the 87th Annual National Collegiate Dairy Cattle Judging Contest, October 1, 2007 in Madison, Wis. The team earned 4th place honors with 2472 points and was 4th in Oral Reasons. Linda Behling led the way for the team, placing 5th overall with 842 points and she was also 9th in Oral Reasons.

Penn State University won the contest and was followed in order by Cornell, Virginia Tech and UW-Madison. Twenty three national and international university teams competed at the event.

The team was coached by Ted Halbach, Dairy Cattle Evaluation Instructor and Dr. Dave Dickson, Emeritus Professor of Dairy Science.

“Finishing in the top five is really icing on the cake,” said Halbach. “I never put our team goals in terms of final placings, but rather making the commitment towards the preparation it takes to put you in a position for success. Each of these students was passionate about what they were doing and embraced the idea of being real students of dairy cattle type. As seniors we ask them to mentor our underclassmen and they truly led by example.”
