Wisconsin Rural Opportunities Foundation Receives 1999 Friend Of Short Course Award
The Wisconsin Rural Opportunities Foundation has been chosen as this year’s Friend of Short Course. The Wisconsin Rural Opportunities Foundation is the successor organization to the Wisconsin Rural Rehabilitation Corporation and these two organizations have provided more Short Course Scholarships than any other organization. The award was presented to Peter Dwyer of Verona, who represented the foundation’s board at the annual Short Course alumni reunion, held in Madison at Jingles.

Donald R. Peterson, Former UW-Madison Extension Leader, Dead At 73
Donald R. Peterson, emeritus professor of agronomy at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, died of a heart attack Saturday, Aug. 8 in Madison. He was 73 years old.

Steve Slinger Of Randolph To Receive Honorary Recognition From College Of Agricultural And Life Sciences
Since receiving his bachelors degree 40 years ago from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, Steve Slinger has been a link between Wisconsin muck farmers and UW-Madison’s College of Agricultural and Life Sciences. As an onion and mint grower from Randolph, Wis., Slinger has worked closely with CALS researchers and the Wisconsin Muck Farmers Association to raise research money and develop research projects.

Come Learn More About Your Lawn
If you’ve got a lawn-care problem or want to learn more about using less fertilizer and fewer pesticides, stop by the Homeowners Field Day at the University of Wisconsin-Madison O.J. Noer Turfgrass Research Facility. The field day is set for Aug. 23 from 1 p.m. to 4:30 p.m., and it’s free. The facility is located at 3101 County M, just north of its intersection with County PD near Verona.

Agronomy Field Day September 11 At Arlington Ag Station
The latest developments in University of Wisconsin-Madison crops and soils research will be on display at Agronomy Field Day, Thursday, Sept. 11 at the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences Arlington Agricultural Research Station. Four tours will look at research in crop production, weed management, forage systems, and soil fertility research. The tour stops will be hosted by CALS researchers and extension specialists.

Rige-Tillage System On Sandy Soil Reduces Ground Water Pollution
Compared with conventional moldboard plowing and no-tillage, a ridge-tillage system for corn approximately halved the fertilizer and herbicide movement to ground water while producing comparable yields in a four-year study on a sandy Wisconsin soil.
