Interim Farm and Industry Short Courses will be offered the weeks of Jan. 5-9 and Jan. 12-16 at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Big farms can generate big controversies — in some parts of Wisconsin, citizen groups have asked local governments to create ordinances to control siting and operation of animal agriculture facilities.

High school seniors and their parents are invited to visit the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and see if the Farm and Industry Short Course will meet their needs.

The University of Wisconsin-Madison dairy cattle judging team won the National Dairy Cattle Judging Contest Sept. 30 at World Dairy Expo in Madison. The team took first in Reasons, Holsteins and Milking Shorthorns, second in Ayrshires, third in Brown Swiss and Guernseys, and ninth in Jerseys.

Neal A. Jorgensen’s extraordinary contributions to Wisconsin agriculture and the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences received further recognition this week when University of Wisconsin-Madison Chancellor David Ward sent a letter to Jorgensen inviting him to remove the “interim” from his current dean title.

Considerable public investment in developing and promoting improved manure management on Wisconsin farms has not always had the desired outcome.

Since receiving his bachelors degree 40 years ago from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, Steve Slinger has been a link between Wisconsin muck farmers and UW-Madison’s College of Agricultural and Life Sciences. As an onion and mint grower from Randolph, Wis., Slinger has worked closely with CALS researchers and the Wisconsin Muck Farmers Association to raise research money and develop research projects.

It’s fair to say that Russ Weisensel has devoted his life to agriculture – as an executive and spokesman for the Wisconsin Agri-Business Council, as a state legislator, as a farmer, and as a farm kid who was “a leader and a most active member of the Maple Knoll 4-H club,” according to childhood friend Richard Renk.

A tornado wiped out most of Phil Peterson’s family dairy farm in 1992, but nothing will erase his contributions to agriculture and Wisconsin’s dairy industry.

Ira L. Baldwin, scientist and administrator, will receive the 1997 Distinguished Service Award from the University of Wisconsin-Madison College of Agricultural and Life Sciences.
