    Center for Integrated Ag Systems selected as a Pesticide Reduction Champion

    The UW-Madison Center for Integrated Agricultural Systems has been selected by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency as a Pesticide Environmental Stewardship Program Champion for 2003. This designation honors CIAS for its efforts to reduce pesticide risk through sustainable agricultural practices such as Integrated Pest Management and organic farming.

    Milking Machine Workshops Offered at UW-Madison

    The College of Agricultural and Life Sciences at the University of Wisconsin-Madison is offering courses on milking machines, milking management and milk quality. The courses are primarily for veterinarians, industry professionals, and milking operation managers who have a basic level of knowledge and some field experience.

    Marshfield Ag Station Dairy Herd To Be Sold

    The Marshfield Agricultural Research Station is liquidating its herd of registered Holsteins prior to the move to its new heifer facilities. The herd, about 50 milking cows and 20 bred heifers, will be sold as two units (cows and heifers; no individual animal sales) via sealed bids to the highest bidder.

    2003 Wisconsin Junior State Fair Dairy Division-AgSource/CRI Production Champions

    Outstanding producing ability was recognized in each of the six dairy breed shows at last week’s Wisconsin Junior State Fair. AgSource/CRI awarded an engraved glass milk pitcher to the exhibitor of the cow with the highest actual 305-day combined butterfat and protein production record.

    Buege Receives American Meat Science Assn. Signal Service Award

    Dennis R. Buege, professor and Extension meat scientist at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, received the 2003 American Meat Science Association Signal Service Award June 18 at the 56th Annual Reciprocal Meat Conference in Columbia, Mo. The award, which recognizes devoted service and lasting contributions to the meat industry and to the association, was sponsored by Central Soya Company, Fort Wayne, Ind.

    UW-Madison Extension Dairy Geneticist Weigel Honored

    Kent Weigel, a dairy geneticist and extension genetics specialist at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, has won the Agway, Inc. Young Scientist Award for 2003 and the 2003 ADSA Foundation Dairy Production Award. Weigel received the awards during the awards ceremony at the ADSA annual meeting in Phoenix.

    UW Partnership With Potato Growers And World Wildlife Fund Earns Major Award

    A partnership between UW-Madison researchers, state potato growers, the World Wildlife Fund and the International Crane Foundation that has reduced industry reliance on toxic pesticides and enhanced farm profitability has been recognized with the United States Department of Agriculture’s prestigious Secretary’s Honor Award for Maintaining and Enhancing the Nation’s Natural Resources and Environment.
