UW-Madison Dairy Cattle Judging Teams Post Four Top-6 Finishes
The University of Wisconsin-Madison dairy cattle judging team took first place in oral reasons for the 13 time in the past 19 years at the National Intercollegiate Dairy Cattle Judging Contest, Sept. 28 at World Dairy Expo in Madison. The team placed fifth overall among 27 teams, and placed first in Ayrshires, second in Milking Shorthorns, third in Guernseys, and fifth in Holsteins and Brown Swiss.
Team members, all seniors at UW-Madison”s College of Agricultural and Life Sciences, were Angie Brey, a dairy science major from Sturgeon Bay, Wis., who was second High Individual and All American, first in Brown Swiss, and second in Oral Reasons, Holsteins and Milking Shorthorns; Amy Hagenow a dairy science and agricultural journalism major from Reedsville, Wis., who placed second in Ayrshires; Matthew Dorshorst, a dairy science major from Junction City, Wis., who was 18th High Individual and All American, fourth in Ayrshires, and fifth in Guernseys and Oral Reasons; and Tom Lyon Jr., also majoring in dairy science, from Westfield, Wis.
A Badger team placed third overall at the Mid-South Intercollegiate Dairy Cattle Judging Contest, Oct. 2 in Memphis, Tenn. The team placed second in Holsteins and Guernseys, third in Jerseys, and fourth in Oral Reasons.
Team members, all CALS sophomores, were Kylene Cook, a dairy science major from Fort Atkinson, Wis., who was High Individual, second in Guernseys, third in Oral Reasons, fourth in Holsteins and fifth in Jerseys; Kristin Barlass, a dairy science major from Janesville, Wis., who placed second in Holsteins and fifth in Jerseys; Brian Kelroy, a dairy science major from Fond du Lac, Wis.; and Nathan Dorshorst, a dairy science major from Junction City, Wis.
At the Accelerated Genetics Intercollegiate Dairy Cattle Judging Contest, Sept. 19 at Viroqua, Wis., the Badger team placed sixth overall. The team placed second in Guernseys and Holsteins, third in Ayrshires, and fifth in oral reasons.
Team members, all CALS sophomores, were Nathan Dorshorst, who was sixth High Individual and third in Ayrshires; Brian Kelroy, who placed first in Guernseys; and Kristin Barlass.
A UW-Madison team also competed at the Pennsylvania All-American Collegiate Dairy Cattle Judging Contest, Sept. 20 at Harrisburg. The team was sixth high team overall, and first in Linear Evaluation, second in Jerseys, and fifth in Brown Swiss and Oral Reasons.
Team members were Casey Olson, a junior Ag. Journalism and Ag. Business Management major from Algoma, Wis., who was 10th High Individual; Amy Hagenow, who placed second in Linear Evaluation and fifth in Jerseys; Sara Brantmeier, a senior Dairy Science and Ag. Journalism major from Sherwood, Wis., who placed fourth in Linear Evaluation; and Bill Maedke, a junior Dairy Science major from Eden, Wis.
UW-Madison judges will compete in one more 1999 judging contest, Nov. 7 at the North American International Livestock Exposition, Louisville, Kentucky.
Dave Dickson, professor emeritus in dairy science, and Ted Halbach, extension youth specialist and dairy cattle evaluation instructor, co-coached the Badger teams. Dickson, who has led Badger judges to five national championships during more than 30 years of coaching, continues to work with the teams. Halbach, in his second year with the team, is a past student of Dickson”s. He formerly owned and managed Marana Dairy Farm in Arizona and served on the board of directors of the Holstein Association USA. “The UW-Madison has built a winning tradition under Dave, and in working together I can learn his teaching methods and hopefully build on his past success,” said Halbach.
