UW-Madison Student Wins Harrisburg Dairy Cattle Judging Contest

Brian Kelroy of Fond du Lac, a junior majoring in dairy science and agricultural economics, took high individual overall at the 32nd All American Dairy Show Invitational Youth Dairy Cattle Judging Contest. The University of Wisconsin-Madison judging team placed fourth out of 14 national university teams in the collegiate division of the contest, held Sept. 25 at Harrisburg, Pa. The Badger team finished 8 points behind first place University of Illinois.

Kelroy also tied for eighth in linear evaluation. Kristin Barlass of Janesville, a junior majoring in dairy science, was first in Guernseys, tied for eighth in linear evaluation, and 10th in oral reasons. Kylene Cook, a junior ag journalism/dairy science major from Fort Atkinson, placed second in linear evaluation. Nathan Dorshorst of Junction City, a junior majoring in dairy science, was sixth high individual overall, second in Holsteins and ninth in oral reasons.

The UW-Madison team placed second in Guernseys, third in linear evaluation, and fourth in oral reasons, Jerseys and Ayrshires. The team was coached by Ted Halbach, CALS dairy cattle evaluation instructor, and Dave Dickson, emeritus professor of dairy science.

“We are really pleased for Brian,” said Halbach of Kelroy”s high individual performance. “He has been very dedicated to what we are trying to accomplish and his contest results represent that effort.”

UW-Madison dairy judges will compete in three more intercollegiate competitions this fall, including the National Contest slated for Oct. 3 at World Dairy Expo in Madison.
