Badger Dairy Cattle Judges Top Louisville Contest
The University of Wisconsin-Madison judging team took first place at the North American International Livestock Exposition Intercollegiate Dairy Cattle Judging Contest, held Nov. 5 at Louisville, Ky.
The UW-Madison team was high team overall with 2,109 points (43 points ahead of second-place University of Vermont). The Badger judges took first in oral reasons, Jerseys and Guernseys, third in Holsteins and fourth in Ayrshires.
Team members, all students at the UW-Madison College of Agricultural and Life Sciences, included: Kristin Barlass, a junior dairy science major from Janesville, who was second high individual overall with 713 points (3 points behind the high individual), first in oral reasons, and second in Jerseys and Brown Swiss; Brian Kelroy, a junior dairy science/ag and applied economics major from Fond du Lac, who was third high individual overall, first in Jerseys, third in oral reasons and fifth in Guernseys; Nathan Dorshorst, a junior dairy science major from Junction City, who was seventh high individual overall, third in Jerseys and sixth in oral reasons; and Laurie Winkelman, a sophomore dairy science major from Watertown.
Seventeen teams from national universities competed in the judging contest. The UW-Madison teams were coached by Ted Halbach, CALS dairy cattle evaluation instructor, and Dave Dickson, emeritus professor of dairy science. The NAILE was the UW-Madison”s third contest win of the 2000 judging season. This win total matches the program”s only other three-win season, in 1983.
