Wisconsin 4-H Dairy Cattle Judges Win National North American Contests
Wisconsin 4H dairy cattle judging teams won the National and North American International Livestock Exposition youth dairy cattle judging contests this fall. This marks the first time Wisconsin has won both contests in the same year. The Wisconsin 4H team placed sixth at the 32nd All American Dairy Show Invitational.
At the National 4-H Dairy Cattle Judging Contest in Madison, the Wisconsin 4-H Team was high team overall (2128 points; 20 points ahead of second-place Maryland), first in oral reasons, first in Ayrshires and Holsteins, second in Brown Swiss and Jerseys, and third in Guernseys.
Jefferson County represented Wisconsin. Team members were Laurie Winkelman of Watertown, who was high individual overall, first in oral reasons, Ayrshires, Brown Swiss and Holsteins, and second in Jerseys; Josey Morris of Watertown, who was second high individual overall, second in oral reasons and Ayrshires, and Guernseys; Bill Stilling of Cambridge; and Katie Cramer of Watertown.
Maureen DeBruin and Gerrit DeBruin of Lake Mills and Roy Hetts of Fort Atkinson coached the team. This is Wisconsin”s first National 4-H Dairy Cattle Judging Contest win since 1983. Wisconsin has won the National Contest five times. The contest was held Oct. 3 in Madison; 32 4H teams competed.
At the 2000 North American International Livestock Exposition Youth Dairy Cattle Judging Contest, the Wisconsin 4-H team was high team overall (1805 points, 48 points ahead of second-place Maryland), high team in oral reasons, first in Jerseys and Guernseys, and third in Holsteins, Ayrshires and Brown Swiss.
Team members were Joe Digangi of Watertown, who was high individual overall, first in Ayrshires, third in Guernseys, and fifth in Jerseys and Brown Swiss; Tony Brey of Sturgeon Bay, who was third high individual overall and fourth in Holsteins; Chris Lundgren of Cushing, who was sixth high individual overall and third in oral reasons; and Andy Brantmeier of Sherwood.
Ted Halbach, CALS dairy cattle evaluation instructor, and Wisconsin Holstein Association Field Representative Angie Brey of Valders coached the team. This is Wisconsin”s sixth win at the NAILE Youth Dairy Cattle Judging Contest – the most of any state. Twenty 4H and FFA competed in the contest, held Nov. 5 at Louisville, Ky.
In the 4H Division at the 32nd All American Dairy Show Invitational Youth Dairy Cattle Judging Contest, the Wisconsin 4H team was sixth high team overall and placed third in Linear Evaluation, fourth in Ayrshires, and fifth in oral reasons and Holsteins.
Team members were Chad Wethal of Stoughton, who placed 10th in oral reasons; Chris Roth of Waunakee, who placed first in linear evaluation; Joel Sutter of Mt. Horeb, who placed sixth in linear evaluation; and James Nolden of Belleville.
Cheryl Marti of Sun Prairie, Mitch Breunig of Sauk City, and Eric Olstad of Stoughton coached the team. Sixteen state 4H teams competed at the show, Sept. 25 at Harrisburg, Pa. Dane County represented Wisconsin.
