UW-Madison dairy cattle judges compete at Accelerated Genetics Judging Contest
A team of dairy cattle judges from the University of Wisconsin-Madison took fourth place at the Accelerated Genetics 10th Annual Midwest Intercollegiate Dairy Cattle Judging Contest, Sept. 14 at Viroqua, Wis. Tom Agnew of Oconomowoc, a senior majoring in dairy science, was second high individual overall and 6th in oral reasons.
The UW-Madison team was 4th in Milking Shorthorns, and 5th in oral reasons, Jerseys and Holsteins. Eighteen national and regional universities teams competed; the University of Illinois team won the contest.
Also on Team 1:
- Molly Florent of Marengo, Ill., a sophomore majoring in dairy science and ag journalism, was 2nd in Brown Swiss and 8th in oral reasons.
- Dan Bauer of Manawa, Wis., a sophomore majoring in dairy science, was 2nd in Milking Shorthorns.
- Crystal McNett of Belmont, Wis., a sophomore majoring in dairy science, was 5th in Holsteins.
The UW-Madison Team 2 placed 6th team overall and 3rd in Milking Shorthorns. Team 2 members:
- Jeff Brantmeier of Sherwood, Wis., a sophomore majoring in dairy science.
- Nicole Hosto of Juda, Wis., a sophomore majoring in dairy science and ag journalism.
- Elizabeth Matzke of Monroe, Wis., a sophomore majoring in dairy science.
The UW-Madison Team 3 placed 11h overall. Team 3 members:
- Justin Powell of Colfax, Ill, a sophomore majoring in dairy science.
- Michelle Bork of Independence, Wis., a sophomore majoring in agronomy.
- Jeanna Burggraf of Lancaster, Wis., a sophomore majoring in dairy science.
Ted Halbach, dairy cattle evaluation instructor, and Dave Dickson, emeritus professor of dairy science, coached the teams.
