UW-Madison Tops All-American Collegiate Judging Contest
A team of dairy cattle judges from the University of Wisconsin-Madison took first place with the high team overall score at the 34th All American Dairy Show Invitational Youth Dairy Cattle Judging Contest, Sept. 23 at Harrisburg, Pa. Laurie Winkelman of Watertown, a senior majoring in dairy science and agricultural journalism, was high individual overall. Josey Morris, also of Watertown, was second high individual overall.
UW-Madison placed high team overall with 2099 points, 41 points ahead of the 2nd place Ohio State University team. The Badger judging team also placed 1st in oral reasons, 1st in Jerseys, 1st in Brown Swiss, 1st in Ayrshires, 2nd in Guernseys, 3rd in linear evaluation, and 4th in Holsteins out of the 15 national university teams competing.
Laurie Winkelman scored 722 points to earn high individual honors. She was 1st in oral reasons, 1st in Holsteins, 1st in linear evaluation, 2nd in Jerseys, 5th in Brown Swiss, and 5th in Ayrshires.
Josey Morris scored 702 points to receive 2nd high individual overall. She was also 3rd in Guernseys, 4th in Brown Swiss, and 5th in oral reasons. Morris is a senior majoring in dairy science and agricultural journalism.
Also on the Badger team were Karla Lundberg of Osseo, a senior majoring in dairy science, and Mark Heinze of Portage, a senior majoring in dairy science. Lundberg was the 16th high individual overall.
Ted Halbach, dairy cattle evaluation instructor, and Dave Dickson, emeritus professor of dairy science, coached the team.
