UW-Madison Plant Pathologist Dewey Moore Dead At 84

J. Duain (Dewey) Moore, emeritus professor of plant pathology at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, died unexpectedly June 6, 1998 at Door County (Wis.) Memorial Hospital. He was 84 years old.
Moore earned a doctorate in plant pathology and botany at the UW-Madison in 1945. He joined the faculty of the Department of Plant Pathology at the UW-Madison College of Agriculture after graduation, and served as fruit-tree disease specialist until his retirement in 1980. He also served as Director of UW Experimental Farms (now called Agricultural Research Stations) from 1974 to 1980.

Moore”s research focused on orchard fruit diseases, and he published more than 80 research papers during his career. He spent two years at the University of Ife, Nigeria, as Dean of Agriculture and head of the Plant Science department. Moore held memberships in the American Phytopathological Society, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the American Institute of Biological Sciences, and the Wisconsin Academy of Sciences, Arts, and Letters. He was the first president of the Wisconsin chapter of Gamma Sigma Delta.

Moore is survived by his wife, Doris; sister Rachael (Roy) Shetter of Willow Street, Pa.; daughter Barbara (Douglas) Henderson of Sturgeon Bay, Wis.; son John D. Moore Jr. of Green Bay, Wis.; and several grandchildren and a great-grandson.

Family graveside services were held at Bayside Cemetery in Door County. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the UW-Madison College of Agricultural and Life Sciences; the Ridges Sanctuary; the Door County Maritime Museum; or Olbrich Botanical Gardens. A memorial service will be held Tuesday, June 23 at 2:30 p.m. at Christ Presbyterian Church, Madison, Wis.
