Sauk, Marquette Counties Win 2007 Jr State Fair Herdsmanship Contest

Wisconsin junior dairy exhibitors gave fairgoers an excellent view of the state”s dairy industry at the 2007 Wisconsin Junior State Fair. County exhibits featuring elite groups of cattle and incorporating dairy promotion themes were judged in the herdsmanship competition. Dairy youth exhibitors from 45 Wisconsin counties competed for the title of champion herdsmen.

Sauk County won the large-herd competition, followed by Barron, Clark, Green, Fond du Lac and Wood counties. Eighteen counties competed in this category, which consist of groups of 20 or more animals.

In the small herd division, which represents groups with five to 19 animals, 27 counties competed and eight received blue ribbons. Marquette County won; Shawano, Winnebago, Monroe, Crawford, Juneau, Washington and Richland counties also received blue ribbon recognition.

The groups were judged on the preparation and care of the exhibit, including care of the animals, appearance, and attitude of their youth exhibitors. Herdsmanship judges came from various parts of the dairy industry, including extension personnel, Wisconsin agriculture instructors, as well as agricultural press, dairy farmers, and A.I. representatives. Counties that received either blue or red group recognition in last year”s competition also judged the event.

In a separate category, displays were judged on their originality, attractiveness and educational value to the public. These displays were a part of each county”s dairy exhibit. “America”s Dairyland is YOUR Land” was this year”s theme that the exhibitors incorporated into their displays. Polk County received Champion Educational Display recognition. Marquette County was recognized as Honorable Mention display. Each county that had a worthy educational display received $100 for its efforts.
