Wisconsin dairy researchers win national awards
Dairy scientists from the University of Wisconsin-Madison received a variety of national awards at the annual meeting of the American Dairy Science Association held recently in St. Louis, Mo.
Louis Armentano, professor of dairy science, received the American Feed Industry Association Award for his research on dairy cattle nutrition.
Ric Grummer, chair of the Department of Dairy Science, received the Nutrition Professionals, Inc. Applied Dairy Nutrition Award for his achievements in research and teaching and outreach in applied dairy nutrition.
Neal Jorgensen, emeritus professor of dairy science and former Dean of the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences at the UW-Madison, received the ADSA Award of Honor for his outstanding contributions to the welfare of the association.
David Mertens, a researcher at the U.S. Dairy Forage Research Center on the UW-Madison campus, received the Pioneer Hi-Bred Forage Award, which recognizes outstanding research and/or educational contributions in forage production, processing, storage and utilization.
Scott Rankin, professor of food science, won an ADSA Foundation Scholar Award in the Dairy Foods category. The award recognizes young scholars who show potential in research and educational leadership and the ability to identify crucial issues affecting the future of the dairy industry.
In addition, Steve Larson, managing editor of Hoard”s Dairyman magazine and a graduate of the UW-Madison dairy science department, received the ADSA Distinguished Service Award for his contributions to the dairy industry.
