Outstanding Dairy Youth Sought for Crowley Leadership Awards

High schoolers in grades 10 through 12 and enrolled in the 4-H dairy project are invited to apply for the James W. Crowley 4-H Dairy Leadership Awards.
The deadline for applications or nominations for the 15 awards is July 15. Winners receive plaques and partial scholarships to attend the National 4-H Dairy Conference in September. The top two candidates will each receive $500 awards for continuing their dairy education. The James W. Crowley Dairy Management and Extension Fund sponsor this 4-H dairy award program.
The recognition is named in honor and memory of James W. Crowley, longtime Extension dairy specialist and strong supporter of dairy youth project work.
“This is Wisconsin 4-H’s most prestigious award,” said Ted Halbach, University of Wisconsin-Madison/Extension dairy youth specialist and the scholarship program’s coordinator. “Past recipients read like a who?s who of Wisconsin 4-H.”
Eligible candidates must meet all of the following requirements:

* Be in the 1 to 12th grade.
* Be enrolled and have at least two years” experience in a 4-H dairy project.
* Demonstrate outstanding interest and ability in the project.
* Exhibit leadership in dairy project and other activities at the club or county level.

Each county is eligible to nominate an unlimited number of members for Crowley Award recognition.
Selection will be based on written applications and a personal interview of each candidate at the Wisconsin State Fair. Candidates are not required to be exhibitors at State Fair.
The National Dairy Conference, Sept. 28 through Oct. 1, 2003 in Madison, is an international event that allows Wisconsin youth to participate in workshops, tour dairy companies and meet other dairy enthusiasts from throughout the United States and Canada. Scholarship winners will pay a $50 registration fee. The rest of their conference expenses will be covered through support provided by the Wuethrich Foundation and the Wisconsin Farm Credit System.
