Jump-Start Your Market Garden

A workshop to help beginning fresh market vegetable growers with start-up issues and marketing will be a highlight of the first day of the Wisconsin Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Conference in Oconomowoc, Wis. Held Jan. 5, 2002, the workshop will be led by two experienced grower-marketers and John Hendrickson, an outreach specialist with the Center for Integrated Agricultural Systems at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

“This workshop is meant to answer some of the questions that beginning market gardeners have about starting a business growing and selling fresh produce,” said Hendrickson. “We”ll be focusing on start-up issues and direct marketing strategies so this workshop is ideal for folks thinking about selling at a local farmers” market, starting a community supported agriculture program, or setting up a roadside stand.”

The grower-instructors, who take the lead role in teaching the class, vary in scale, cropping mix, marketing strategies, and growing methods. “This is a unique opportunity to learn from experienced growers who provide diverse perspectives, invaluable tips, and practical know-how,” said Hendrickson. “The program also provides a chance to network and learn from fellow gardeners, farmers, and entrepreneurs,” he added.

The cost is $50 and includes lunch and a packet of resources. Enrollment is limited to 30 people and the class fills quickly, so please register early to avoid disappointment. For more information, contact John Hendrickson at (608) 265-3704.

This is just one of several sessions that focus on marketing at the Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Growers Conference, which runs Jan. 5-7. For a complete list of activities see the conference program or call (920) 478-3852.
