Wisconsin Teams Compete At National 4-H Dairy Bowls

Young dairy experts from Door and Wood counties recently represented Wisconsin at two national dairy bowl competitions. The two teams earned the right to represent Wisconsin by placing at the top of the Wisconsin 4-H Dairy Bowl Contest, held last January.

The Door County dairy bowl team placed second to Illinois in a close final match at the World Dairy Expo 4-H Dairy Bowl Invitational held in October, where five teams competed. The team defeated the New Mexico and Illinois teams to proceed to the final round, where they lost twice to Illinois in the double-elimination contest. Team members included Tony Brey and Hugh Kinnard of Sturgeon Bay, and Mike Tassoul and Zac Rockendorf of Brussels. Clarice Brey of Sturgeon Bay coached the team.

The Wood County dairy bowl team competed at the North American Invitational 4-H Dairy Quiz Bowl Contest held in Louisville, Ky. in November. The team, consisting of Dan and Craig Slattery of Rudolph, Andrea Schultz of Wisconsin Rapids, and Anne Dorshorst of Junction City, was coached by Donna Dorshorst of Junction City. They played five rounds in the competition before being eliminated. Twenty teams competed; the Virginia team won.

Dairy bowl competition consists of being able to correctly answer questions pertaining to dairy cattle, including facts about breeds, genetics, herd health, nutrition and reproduction.
