Young dairy experts from Door County had a runner-up finish as Wisconsin”s representatives to the National 4-H Dairy Quiz Bowl Contest held Nov. 3 in Louisville, Ky.
Dairy Bowl is a quiz competition where all the questions are about dairy topics. Teams compete in a double elimination format by giving oral answers to questions posed by a moderator. Each match has both an individual and toss-up question round. The winning teams were able to correctly answer questions about breeds, genetics, health concerns, nutrition, and many other dairy topics. The tournament attracted teams from 21 states.
The Wisconsin team won eight matches before being beaten by Illinois, the eventual contest champion. Wisconsin 4-H then defeated New York in the finals of the consolation bracket that put them in the semi-finals against the undefeated group from Illinois. Wisconsin, needing to beat Illinois twice to take home the championship, won their first match-up but lost in a winner take-all final.
Members of the Wisconsin team were Tony Brey and Hugh Kinnard of Sturgeon Bay, and Zac Rockendorf, Mike Tassoul and alternate Travis Degrave of Brussels. Clarice Brey of Sturgeon Bay coached the Door County contestants.
The Wisconsin 4-H Dairy Endowment Fund was one of several groups that sponsored the team.
