Preparing For A Life In The Great Outdoors

Whether it”s boardsailing, diving on coral reefs or just a good old-fashioned hike, spending days off out-of-doors is the norm for a large segment of the population.

But for some, the urge to be out-of-doors is bigger than a lifetime of vacation days can accommodate. For these individuals, there”s the College”s undergraduate major in Recreation Resources Management.

Graduates with this major end up in a wide range of jobs related to human use of natural resources, public land management and the recreation industry. Many graduates work for national, state or local park systems. Others take jobs with outdoor recreation or tourism firms. Some go to conservation organizations.

The program is based in the Department of Forest Ecology and Management, but Recreation Resources Management majors enroll in a broad range of courses across campus.

“They take classes in communication, rural sociology, business, forestry, wildlife ecology, soil science, and environ-mental studies,” explains Chris Lupton, who advises Recreation Resources Management majors. “They”re also required to do an internship. Many of them intern as park rangers.”

They”ll graduate with a solid foundation in biological and social sciences and a thorough understanding of human and institutional behavior, she adds.
