UW-Madison Dairy Cattle Judges Win Guernseys Event At Louisville Contest

A team of dairy cattle judges from the University of Wisconsin-Madison”s College of Agricultural and Life Sciences placed first in Guernseys and ninth overall at the North American International Livestock Exposition Intercollegiate Dairy Cattle Judging Contest, held at Louisville, Ky.

Nick Uglow, a junior from Watertown majoring in dairy science and ag journalism , was third high individual and placed first in Guernseys, sixth in Jerseys, and eighth in Oral Reasons. Casey Olson, a junior from Algoma majoring in ag journalism , was sixth in Brown Swiss and seventh in Holsteins. Other team members were Jodi Luttropp , a junior from Berlin majoring in dairy science and ag journalism, and Caroline Carncross, a junior from Lodi majoring in Interior Design.

Dave Dickson, professor emeritus in dairy science, and Ted Halbach, extension youth specialist and dairy cattle evaluation instructor, co-coached the Badger teams. Dickson, who has led Badger judges to five national championships during more than 30 years of coaching, continues to work with the teams. Halbach, in his second year with the team, is a past student of Dickson”s. He formerly owned and managed Marana Dairy Farm in Arizona and served on the board of directors of the Holstein Association USA.
