Pumpkin Therapy

A truckload of pumpkins from the gardens of the West Madison Agricultural Research Station had patients at UW Children”s Hospital grinning like jack o”lanterns. The pumpkins – some of which weighed more than 100 pounds – included specimens of several of the 50 varieties grown at the station”s demonstration gardens. Helen Harrison, Extension horticulture specialist in the CALS Department of Horticulture, uses the gardens to evaluate varieties for fresh-market growers and home gardeners and to train participants in Cooperative Extension”s Master Gardener Program.
