CALS Food Science Studnets Take Honors At Dairy Products Evaluation Contets

Students from the Department of Food Science at the University of Wisconsin-Madison won several honors at the 77th Collegiate Dairy Products Evaluation Contest held Oct. 6 in Toronto, Canada. Three undergraduates and one graduate student competed in evaluating six categories of dairy products: ice cream, butter, milk, yogurt, Cheddar cheese and cottage cheese.

The undergraduate team of Elizabeth Behringer, Steve Benish, and Heidi Hromadka took first place for butter judging, second place for ice cream, third place for milk and placed third overall. Steve Benish earned individual honors with third place in the butter category.

Colleen Kubitz, graduate student representative, took first place in Cheddar cheese, butter and milk.

Bob Bradley, a food scientist at UW-Madison”s College of Agricultural and Life Sciences, coaches the team with the help of assistant coach Jessica Jacobsen, a graduate student and former team member.

Marianne Smukowski, dairy foods safety/quality coordinator at the Wisconsin Center for Dairy Research, was the lead judge for the butter portion of the contest. She has been a judge for this contest for the last nine years and lead judge for the last four years.
