UW-Madison Dairy Cattle Judges Win National Title At World Dairy Expo

The University of Wisconsin-Madison dairy cattle judging team won the National Dairy Cattle Judging Contest Sept. 30 at World Dairy Expo in Madison. The team took first in Reasons, Holsteins and Milking Shorthorns, second in Ayrshires, third in Brown Swiss and Guernseys, and ninth in Jerseys.

Jered Haase of Sommerset, Wis., a senior majoring in dairy science, was the high individual judge in the contest. Haase was the second high individual in Brown Swiss, Holsteins and Jerseys, fifth in Reasons, and 10th in Milking Shorthorns.

Tammy Voegeli, a dairy science/ag journalism major from Columbus, Wis., was seventh high individual and placed second in Ayrshires, third in Holsteins, and ninth in Reasons.

Jennifer Hasler of Monroe, Wis., a senior majoring in dairy science, was 10th high individual and placed sixth in reasons.

Matt Sattler of Malone, Wis., a senior majoring in dairy science, was 24th high individual in the contest and placed eighth in Jerseys, ninth in Holsteins and 12th in Reasons.

The UW-Madison team was coached by retired dairy scientist Dave Dickson, who has coached the dairy cattle judging teams for 30 years. Twenty-five teams from throughout the United States competed in the contest, which was held in conjunction with World Dairy Expo.
