Marshfield Summer Field Day To Focus On Crop Management

If you”re interested in learning some of the latest crop-management techniques that may increase grain and forage yields and profitability, check out Summer Field Day July 1 at the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences Marshfield Agricultural Research Station.

The tour will begin with a welcome by station superintendent Tom Drendel and opening remarks by assistant superintendent Dan Wiersma. Extension corn specialist Joe Lauer will discuss seeding rates for silage corn, and extension forage specialist Dan Undersander will talk about sequential-maturity alfalfa. Extension agronomist Chris Boerboom will take a look at herbicide-resistant crops for Wisconsin.

Soil scientist Larry Bundy will explain strategies for determining corn nitrogen needs, and John Peters, director of the UW Soils and Forage Analysis Lab at Marshfield, will discuss soil test recommendation changes for 1997.

Extension ag engineer Ron Schuler will lead a discussion of hay baler sizes, bale packages and custom operators, followed by a demonstration of a large square baler.

The tour will begin at 10 a.m. and conclude at 12:30 p.m. Tuesday, July 1. The program is free, and CEU credits will be available for Certified Crop Advisor participants. No lunch will be served.
